Extreme Cold Overview

  • Extreme cold and winter storms can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, car accidents, carbon monoxide poisoning, and heart strain from overexertion.
  • Residents are encouraged to stay safe, healthy, and warm by preparing for dangerous temperatures and conditions.

Warming Centers and Alerts

  • During periods of extreme cold, Prince George’s County opens warming centers where residents can temporarily escape the weather.
  • Residents can also sign up for Alert Prince George’s at alert.mypgc.us to receive weather and emergency notifications by text, phone, or email.

Winter Weather Terms

  • A Winter Storm Warning means dangerous winter weather such as heavy snow, significant freezing rain, or sleet is expected very soon or is already happening, and you should take action to stay safe. These warnings are typically issued about 12 to 24 hours before the hazardous conditions are forecast to begin.
  • A Winter Storm Watch warns that conditions are favorable for severe winter weather such as a blizzard, heavy snow, significant freezing rain, or sleet in your area. It is typically issued 12 to 48 hours before the expected start of the storm to give the public time to prepare.
  • A Winter Weather Advisory is issued when expected snow, freezing rain, freezing drizzle, or sleet will create notable disruptions. These conditions can become life-threatening if people do not use proper caution.

Staying Safe Outdoors

  • Limit time outside, especially strenuous activity, and consider visiting a warming center if you must be outdoors for long periods.
  • Wear several layers of loose-fitting clothing under a heavy coat, plus a hat, scarf or mask, and snug sleeves at the wrist to reduce heat loss.

Staying Safe Indoors

  • Use wood stoves, fireplaces, and space heaters with extreme caution, and never run generators, grills, or camp stoves indoors or near home air intakes because of carbon monoxide risk.
  • Only use properly vented combustion heaters, keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, and avoid using extension cords with heaters.

Vehicles, Animals, and Vulnerable Residents

  • Keep gas tanks near full, maintain antifreeze, carry a phone/charger, and pack extra blankets and supplies in case of breakdowns in cold weather.
  • Pets must not be left outside unattended in extremely cold temperatures, and doing so may be considered cruelty and subject to fines.
  • People needing emergency shelter can call the 24-hour Homeless Resource Line at 1-888-731-0999, and residents worried about someone who is homeless can submit an online form so outreach teams can offer help.
